Home Fire Safety Tips 

  • Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly
  • Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year
  • Practice a home escape plan frequently with your family
  • Never open doors that are hot to the touch
  • Have two escape routes from each room when possible

 

Child Fire Safety Tips

  • Show children how to crawl low on the floor, below the smoke, in case of fire
  • Keep matches and lighters in a secured drawer or cabinet
  • Teach children to get out quickly and to stay out in case of fire
  • Practice a home fire escape plan with your children and designate a meeting place outside
  • Teach children the nature of fire: hot, fast, dark and deadly!
  • Teach children not to hide from firefighters
  • Supervise young children closely
  • Familiarize children with the sound of your smoke alarm
  • Demonstrate to children how to stop, drop to the ground, and roll if their clothes catch fire
  • Bring your children to your local fire station
